Modern technology keeps track of your youngster

January 2004 Data Acquisition & Telemetry

Every parent has been through that heart-stopping moment in a public place, when you realise that your child is nowhere to be seen.

Modern technology has come to the rescue of anxious parents who need to keep one eye on one or more of their children in crowded or risky situations. In environments where the possibility of child snatching is a reality, or where an over-curious youngster may be tempted to wander off, a new gadget has been developed which effectively keeps tabs on your child's whereabouts.

Developed by a South African radio communications company, Rotrax Technologies, the child monitoring system consists of a parent's monitor shaped like a remote control (the receiver) and a child's unit (the transmitter) designed to look like a badge. Using the latest Chipcon RF chip technology in both units, the transmitter alerts the receiver with an audible signal the minute the wearer moves out of range. Although not a directional finder, it will track the distance by the strength of the audio signal. The receiver will continue to monitor the position of up to two other badge wearers, should the adult have three children under his or her care at the same time.

CyberTots UK has commissioned the first of a 5000 unit order contract from Rotrax Technologies, to be distributed through electrical goods chain stores and baby shops in the UK. The child monitoring units will also be available in South Africa at a later stage, subject to demand. In the meantime, Rotrax Technologies is working on more advanced versions which will provide full tracking capabilities or can be used in situations such as swimming pool monitoring.
