Multimode fibre-optic to RS232/485 converter

December 2003 Data Acquisition & Telemetry Surveillance

The ADAM-4541 module from ProMicro can be used as an RS232/422/485 point-to-point or point-to-multipoint connection for transmitting and converting full/half-duplex signals and their equivalents within a fibre-optic environment. These compact modules provide stable and error-free data transmission in direct 'plug-and-play' conditions. They are easily mounted on a DIN rail, panel, or can be piggybacked. Transmission speeds of up to 115,2 Kbps are possible, and with the fibre-optics, transmission up to a distance of 2,5 km can be accomplished.

Protection is provided against lightning strikes and EMI/RFI interference, and no external flow control signals are required for the RS485 mode. Automatic, internal RS485 bus supervision is supplied, and power and data flow indication is given via the LEDs on the front panel. The ADAM-4541 modules are able to link various machinery equipped with RS232/422/485 communication ports such as computer systems or machines used in manufacturing processes.

The use of fibre-optics eliminates problems associated with ground loops and spark hazards, and operation in flammable areas is possible. Standard ST connectors permit the module's fibre-optic ports to accommodate a wide range of fibre-optic cable sizes.
