Krohne's Optimass 7000 series flowmeters lend themselves well to applications where relatively low mass flow rates need to be measured accurately - even in 'sticky' circumstances. Here are some examples of areas where these instruments are proving their worth.
Cereal bars, Heudebert, France
Heudebert is producing popular muesli bars in one of their facilities. All of the components used in the production of cereal bars, ranging from caramel, glucose, syrup to palm oil have an annoying inclination to solidify as soon as the temperature drops. To avoid all risks of blockage, the meters are equipped with a heating jacket that offers efficient control of the temperature in the measuring tube. For dosing this component Heudebert looked for a precise mass flowmeter with no obstructions (to allow for easy cleaning) and with the option of being able to heat the meter. Optimass introduces only a small pressure drop (because of its single straight tube design) and it also offered the heating option to keep the product liquefied.
Beer making
In a hop extract processing plant in the Netherlands a Krohne Optimass 7000 accurately measures dosing of the hop extract in a heated chamber at 45°C. Due to the very high viscosity and the subsequent need to reduce the pressure drop, it is necessary to choose a meter that is able to operate at slow flow rates. In this case Krohne's Optimass was said to show a marked improvement over the competition. The customer was delighted with the results of the measurement tests and the equipment was delivered to the end user to be brought into operation. Accurate dosing has permitted significant savings, as input volume margins can be much smaller.
Pouch filling, Unilever Best Foods, Thayingen, Switzerland
Unilever Best Foods, one of the world's largest food product producers has automated its production line in Thayingen. Ten-litre pouches of salad dressing for restaurants are filled automatically. The plant is designed as a double filling station. Depending on type of dressing, the pouches are filled using one or two Optimass meters. The filling process takes roughly 7 seconds; for precise dosing the low flow cut off was de-activated. (The meters are held with clamps on their bodies - without any effect on performance.)
Optimass 7000 and 7100 features
* Available as single straight tube and single Z-shaped tube.
* Available in titanium, stainless steel and Hastelloy.

Editor's Choice Flow Measurement & Control
There are many processes where it is undesirable for the load to suddenly change quickly, for example in the paper industry. Examples of level control have involved reasonably fast tuning. An example of a level loop tuned this way and responding to a step change in setpoint is given.
