MTL has created a new business unit called MOST (MTL Open System Technologies), which introduces two new open system control products for process industry applications: the MOST Logic Controller and the MOST Logic Workbench.
According to the President of MOST, Dennis Gillispie, MOST's products provide open system-based hardware and software technology that can be used as building blocks for control systems in realtime applications. Users can also choose several of these field-proven components to meet their control systems needs - snapping them together to create sophisticated control systems.
Gillispie explained that because many automation companies are moving toward the new, open world of enhanced end-user value and choice, which requires that they change from a traditional solution to a new one, and therefore MOST is providing open control technology to help them make this change.
The MOST Logic Controller and Logic Workbench are two of the new products and they have been specifically designed for integrators, OEMs and sophisticated end-users. The Logic Controller is a rugged, field-mountable control platform intended for those process applications that might have previously used programmable logic controllers (PLCs) because of their ability to scale to fit smaller applications. Process customers are provided with an affective alternative to PLC solutions. When combined with the MTL8000 Process I/O system components, it offers cost-savings over control-room mounted systems as well as flexible system design and high system availability. A MOST Logic Controller can use off-the-shelf HMI packages, including Wonderware, Cimplicity, and Intellution.
The MOST Logic Controller is a suitable solution for hazardous and harsh applications. It operates over the -40 to +70°C range - typical of industrial, harsh process applications. The powerful logic controller provides a tight control loop response, assuring that the system has more than enough capacity for advanced control strategies. It features a rigorous redundancy model and has a redundant Ethernet communications ports for reliable system operations and high-speed communications.
The MOST Logic Workbench is used to develop applications for this logic controller. It fully supports the five IEC 61131-3 automation languages plus flow chart. It provides a full toolset to download, simulate, develop, debug, monitor and edit control programs. Its Windows interface guides the users through the development of their projects and its simulator allows them to test extensively before start-up. The completed applications are then downloaded to the logic controller.
The MOST products are targeted at the process automation market including: chemicals and petrochemicals, waste water and water, gas pipeline and oil, paper and pulp, cement, power generation and electrical distribution and the beverage and food industries. Temperature Controls is the sole SA agent for MTL.
