Flame monitoring and burner controller seminar

December 2003 Training & Education Commercial (Industry)

As part of the ongoing programme of informative seminars for its customers, The Combustion Group of Sebenza, Johannesburg invited one of its major suppliers to give presentations at its premises.

During the last week of October, over 40 selected customers were treated to two seminars given by the Forney Fireye operations manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa, Dave Probyn. Dave is a frequent visitor to South Africa, where his expertise is called upon by the Combustion Group to assist with difficult or complex flame management applications.

The main purpose of the seminars was to introduce new Fireye products to the delegates but Dave took the opportunity to recap over the theory and chemistry of combustion, just to refresh memories or cover unknown ground.

Starting with simple flame detection, moving onto self checking and more elaborate systems with communication facilities designed to be interfaced with PLCs, Dave also discussed the Nexus Flame Management system which can save up to 5% of the client's fuel bills purely by controlling the air fuel ratio accurately, even taking into account the varying density of air throughout the day.

While The Combustion Group's main activity with Forney Fireye is through the Fireye equipment, Dave Probyn also introduced Forney's high-energy ignitors to the assembled company. The highlight of this section of proceedings was the demonstration of a high Energy Ignitor working under water. Proof that it can surmount the most arduous of industrial applications. The guest list to the Combustion Group Seminars is limited to existing customers, other parties interested in combustion equipment and peripherals can request to be included on the e-mail distribution list.
