New compact controller

November 2003 PLCs, DCSs & Controllers

Yokogawa Electric Corporation is offering its Centum CS 3000 R3.04, the latest version of its flagship Centum CS 3000 R3 integrated production control system. The functionality of this new product has been greatly enhanced with the inclusion of a new FFCS compact controller that enables the control system to accommodate a wider range of applications, including small-scale plants. This contrasts with earlier versions of the Centum CS 3000 R3 series, which were aimed mainly at medium- to large-scale process plants in the oil and chemical industries.

The development of the R3 series has been based on the concept of continually adopting new functions while maintaining continuity with existing functions. This control system has evolved in quick response to changing customer needs and through the ongoing development and introduction of leading-edge technologies.

Product features

* FFCS compact controller for small- and medium-scale plants: offering reliability that is essential for DCS as well as cost-effectiveness make it suitable for small- to medium-scale plants. 20% the size of a conventional controller, the FFCS has the same reliable architecture, control functions and fully redundant configuration as the controllers used by large plants.

* Enhanced Fieldbus capability: the controller supports Profibus DP-V1, which is the standard in discrete manufacturing processes. The Foundation Fieldbus capability is also improved, providing smaller systems the same functions such as integrated operation and monitoring environments and full-redundant systems that are found in large systems.

* Increased subsystem connectivity: a subsystem gateway station was developed which employs OPC (OLE for process control), the industry-standard, general-purpose interface used in process control. This has improved connectivity with electrical facilities, machining equipment, and other subsystems.

About Yokogawa South Africa

Yokogawa South Africa was originally founded in 1978 as Delta Controls, the exclusive distributor of Yokogawa Process Control and Instrumentation (PCI) products in South Africa. In 1997 Delta Controls became a wholly owned subsidiary of Yokogawa Europe. Yokogawa South Africa has its head office in Johannesburg and has branches in Vanderbijlpark, Durban and Cape Town. Main Yokogawa product groupings are: recorders, controllers, transmitters, flowmeters, analytical (liquid and gas) as well as distributed control systems. The company is also the exclusive distributor for American Meter and Dresser gas equipment, Barksdale pressure and level devices and Kinetrol Actuators.

Michael Brown Control Engineering Editor's Choice PLCs, DCSs & Controllers
Many process engineers do not appreciate the importance of flow loops in their unit controls. A senior process engineer once told me that flow loops need not be tuned well, as they generally have little effect on the more important and much slower loops like temperatures and pressures.

PLCs, DCSs & Controllers
Data acquisition, data logging and data analysis are required functions for most modern industrial control systems. The simplest and lowest cost way to provide these functions is often by using the same platform that’s providing real-time control, namely the PLC or the programmable automation controller.
