Surface gloss sensors
November 2003
Sensors & Transducers
ASSTech's German principal Wenglor has developed a sensor that is capable of determining the level of gloss on a surface. The colour of the object and the distance between the surface and the sensor are of almost no significance, because the measuring method does not depend on these quantities. The sensor measures the degree of gloss at a given object, ie the relationship between reflection and remission of light returned from the object.
Visible laser light and a large opening angle make it very easy to adjust the sensor to the respective application. Further advantages include compact dimensions: 16 x 26 x 57,5 mm and a working range of 2,5 to 40 mm.
Typical applications include the recognition of transparent labels on various backings, glass and plastics; the application of paint layers and the drying status of various coatings can also be monitored reliably by these sensors.
ASSTech also represents the following agencies: Gantner - data acquisition, controller and data-logger modules; Inducoder - shaft encoders; Rechner - capacitive and inductive sensors, opto-electronic, calorimetric flow sensors and magneto-resistive sensors; Jumo - professionals in process control; Burster - calibration and test equipment and Wöhrle - intelligent display systems.
