Contactless encoders offer long service

October 2003 Sensors & Transducers

In multiturn shaft encoders, the number of rotations is normally detected with a gear unit. However, in everyday industrial life this often proves to be a weak point. Like any mechanical system, it is also subject to wear and the abrasion can soil the code disk.

IVO uses a different method. The mechanical gear unit is replaced with the 'touchless encoder' principle patented in 1992 whereby the rotations are detected electronically using two magnetically triggered sensors offset by 90°. The number of rotations are evaluated and stored in an ASIC, which is buffered with a lithium battery. As a result, the values are retained even in de-energised state. The service life of the lithium battery is over 20 years; its charge state is available at all times at a diagnostic output and can, for example, be output via a fieldbus, making this system more reliable than the mechanical unit, as a failure can now be detected at an early stage.

Thanks to this design principle, the multiturn encoders adapt to virtually all fieldbus systems commonly used today. IVO's Magtivo, Multivo and Activo encoders can easily be combined with different bus covers integrating the corresponding fieldbus electronics. For system and machine manufacturers, this increases flexibility and stocks are reduced, as the desired bus cover can simply be mounted on the basic sensor. Combinations include CAN, CANopen, DeviceNet, Profibus-DP, SSI and Optic fibre bus. IVO is distributed by Timecount.
