Guided pneumatic drives replace user-fabricated solutions

October 2003 Pneumatics & Hydraulics Training & Education

The DFM modular pneumatic drive system and the small, rodless DGC pneumatic drive from Festo both replace elaborate user-fabricated solutions and save space. With features including a maximum speed of 1,5 m/s and end-position accuracy better than 0,5 mm, these drives - part of a full range of guided versions - offer high dynamics and precision at the same time.

Both the DFM-B piston rod drive with two guide rods parallel to the piston rod, and the DGC, a new compact rodless drive, demonstrate a clearly distinct objective: both are suitable for simple handling units.

The DFM-B is suited to single axis and simple, multi-axis applications in the field of handling and assembly technology. New modular functions including shock absorbers (YSRW) and adjustable end-position cushioning (PPV) provide for reliable cushioning of moving loads at increased speeds, while also reducing cycle times.

Optional fine adjustment of the stroke is of particular interest to engineers, assuring individualised, yet simple adaptation of strokes to end-positions. Configurations with strokes of up to 400 mm and piston rod diameters of 20, 25, 32 and 40 mm, as well as high torque and force resistance can be implemented individually by means of the four bearings per drive unit and, either, plain bearing or ball bearing guides. Various air supply and mounting options and integration with the SMx-8 proximity sensor are other important features.

As a rodless standard drive, the DGC supports the continuously growing performance requirements typical of multi-axis equipment concepts. Said to be the smallest drive of its type available on the market, the DGC is furnished with a guide as standard equipment and is practically leak-free. A mounting concept in the form of a dovetail connector is offered for simple installation and high rigidity. In the 8 and 12 mm diameters, the guided drive can be used either as a basic drive or with a recirculating ball bearing guide.

The unit is used primarily in special machinery manufacturing where emphasis is placed upon short lead times, long service life, maintenance-free operation and high load capacities. With its minimal dimensions, outstanding performance characteristics and excellent repetition accuracy, this drive unit is extremely suitable for the electronics, light assembly, pharmaceuticals and precision engineering industries.
