Level Measurement & Control

Standalone or system-integrated level-measurement device

Endress+Hauser is offering a smart transmitter for continuous and non-contact precision level measurement in petrochemical custody transfer and inventory control applications, called Micropilot S.

Precise automated tank gauges are specifically employed in the storage of liquid hydrocarbons in the petrochemical industry, as one-millimetre accuracy is demanded. Level measurement is usually computed together with pressure and temperature values to determine the true quantity of product in a given tank.

A tank side monitor that is separated from the actual level measurement enables the user to select measurement methods and systems to be employed, while successfully determining the exact position of the temperature and pressure-dependent reference points, as well as taking the thermal and hydrostatic tank expansion into account.

The new radar gauge meets all the requirements of custody transfer level radar, and its makers believe that it is unique in its ability to be integrated into a tank gauging solution, while at the same time being just as suitable to be used as a cost-effective standalone device.

Micropilot S, which meets the relevant requirements according to OIML R85 and API 3.1B, is complemented with a comprehensive antenna range to choose from. Horn antenna, parabolic antenna or rod antenna with measurement ranges up to 40 m may be used in free space measurement. For applications in stilling wells, Endress+Hauser has designed a special planar antenna that generates a dynamically balanced orientation of the magnetic flux lines so that the electric flux lines do not touch the wall, thereby avoiding interference.

"A special feature of Micropilot S is the gas-tight feed-through for the antenna. This second line of defence is of great significance for users handling highly toxic or diffusive products," states Sean Frost, Endress+Hauser non-contact level product manager.

"The reduced power consumption (320 mW) of pulse radar systems has facilitated the development of a cost-effective 2x2-wire system with two standard 4 to 20 mA signal wires. This negates the need for mains on the roof of the tank, enhancing operational safety."

Commissioning and maintenance are made simple with a 4-line plain text display and the ToF Tool, easy step-by-step commissioning and analysis is now standard.
