Advanced solutions platform for the petrochemical industry

September 2003 System Integration & Control Systems Design Infrastructure

Advanced control in the petrochemical industry relies on accurate information and is enhanced by predictions about what will happen in the process. CSense is an advanced solutions platform developed by Crusader Systems, which is used for soft sensor applications and predictive maintenance on petrochemical plants.

The CSense platform equips the process engineer with the software tools to accurately model a plant process. Functionality includes neural network modelling, on-line and off-line model training, advanced optimisation techniques such as genetic algorithms, crisp and fuzzy logic rule bases as well as fundamental modelling capabilities. Data collected from the process is verified and validated using tailor made data validation blocks. Robust OPC (OLE for process control) interfaces are used to communicate with the plant base layer control system.

Global engineering and technology companies in the process industry have made use of CSense for more than two years, and the network of solution providers that creates new packaged solutions on CSense is expanding rapidly. The platform is supplied with its own robust industrial server. The server simplifies product support and can be conveniently rack mounted in any server or PLC cabinet.

CSense can be used for many advanced control applications in the petrochemical industry. It has proved particularly successful in the back up and validation of on-line, in stream analysers as well as equipment failure prediction using unique equipment health indices. The annual CSense Users Group to be held on 26 September at CSIR conference centre in Pretoria, will showcase these and many other CSense applications.
