Certified Profibus engineers' course

July 2003 Training & Education

The Southern African Profibus User Group, together with events management company élancommunications, recently arranged for a group of South African engineers and technicians to visit the Manchester Metropolitan University, in order to attend the Certified Profibus Engineers' Course.

The course stretched over 5½ full days of lectures, practical and theoretical exams. It also included a PROFISafe and ASi Safe workshop at Siemens Manchester. Andy Verwer, lecturer at the MMU and international Profibus expert, guided the group through over 30 training modules, and was said to be a particularly thorough and hands-on trainer.

Says Andy Verwer, "The group from South Africa was well informed and educated in the fundamentals of Profibus technology. They were extremely conscientious, hard working and a pleasure to work with. Individuals in the group scored some of the highest marks ever in the history of the course since its inception."

All seven students passed both the practical and theoretical exams, and now boast certification as the only qualified Profibus engineers in Africa, together with Ivan De Waal, project manager at Endress + Hauser, who qualified in 2001. Students on this year's course were: Nigel Strachan (Metso Automation); Ernst Smith (Festo); Frank Furstenburg (Siemens); Riaan Kruger (Yokogawa); Piet Ferreira (Sasol Synfuels); Tony Fourie (Mondi Kraft); Danie Wentzel (Endress + Hauser).

The SA Profibus User Group will continue to offer engineers and technicians the opportunity to attend courses such as these at least once per annum. The User Group also offers a certified Profibus Installers' Course from 14 to 24 October of this year in Johannesburg, and will be able to accommodate 80 students across the two weeks.
