The BORCO terminal in Freeport, Bahamas has ordered radar-based tank gauging for its 43 storage tanks. The $400 000 project includes a Saab Rosemount radar gauging system with multispot temperature measurement. Also included are network adapted inventory tank gauging software packages. The software calculates all inventory values such as net standard volumes, makes event recording, alarm management, etc.
Before placing the contract, BORCO tested two Saab Rosemount radar gauges at the site for over a year. The test gauges were emulating the fieldbus communication of the previously installed mechanical gauges, which made the electrical installation easier and less costly than it would have been had it been necessary to run an additional bus system.
BORCO is a former refinery (Bahamas Oil Refining Company) turned into a storage terminal. It is the largest tank terminal in the Bahamas and owned by Venezuelan oil giant PDVSA.
Saab Rosemount Tank Control lays claim to being the first company to introduce radar tank gauging and is a leading tank gauging supplier today. Since 2001 the company is part of Emerson Process Management. Rosemount Tank Control's main product is the TankRadar Rex system, a tank gauging system for the oil industry. The system includes gauges for all types of storage tanks as well as HMI software with inventory calculations, integrated temperature, pressure and water bottom measurement. Part of the package includes advanced communication features like emulation of other vendor's fieldbuses, OPC compatibility and Internet connection.
