When monitoring a wastewater treatment plant and its sewer networks, the primary objective is to identify invalid or unwanted operational conditions timeously, allowing for preventative remedial action.
With that in mind, instrumentation specialist Endress+Hauser designed an application package for its Memo-Graph data recorder specifically relevant to the wastewater industry. "Managing a wastewater plant does not only consist of operation, supervision and maintenance of all equipment involved, but also monitoring and controlling the operation as well as measuring, examining, recording and analysing," says Endress+Hauser spokesperson, Grant Joyce. "In addition to recording and documenting the most important parameters (such as temperature, pH values, dissolved oxygen, conductivity and turbidity) should take the form of a 1/4 hourly average, peak and low value record. The daily, monthly, yearly peak and low values should be calculated from the quantities on each quantity channel, and minimum flow quantities required for seepage water calculation within a preset time should be calculated automatically."
Using signal analysis that complies with the Bavarian self-monitoring regulations, the Memo-Graph records every relevant parameter, ranging from flow measurement to conductivity and dissolved oxygen. It also calculates peak and low value intervals with the help of input integration and intermediate mathematical channels and offers additional alarm functions via relay outputs. Alarm set points are documented and can be transmitted to audible alarms, contactors and pumps. Furthermore, measurement of inflow within a preset time scale can be used as the basis for seepage water recording.
Not only the wastewater quantity is recorded, but also the running times of pumps, controllers and valves. Using a serial interface, the stored data can be read out and then analysed and visualised on a PC by using free ReadWin operational software. Operational personnel are thus left to focus on managing the plant from a holistic perspective and ensure optimal performance at the push of a button in the control room.
