Tilt switch for material detection

June 2003 Operator Interfaces, Switches & Relays

The TX1115 from Trolex is intended for detecting the presence of powdered or solid material in mechanically harsh situations. Made from cast SG iron; it is suitable for underground use and can operate reliably from -20 to 100°C.

The unit houses an electro-pneumatic timer that has an adjustable time range of 0,2 to 30 seconds. A steel ball depresses the timer actuator whilst the tilt switch is vertical, but if the switch is moved through an angle exceeding 15° the ball releases the actuator and the time period commences. When the time period expires a voltage free changeover contact operates. The contacts and timer reset when the tilt switch returns to within 6° of the vertical.

The tilt switch is suspended over the area to be monitored using chains and eyebolts. Where there is a chance of the tilt switch swinging away from the material then two separate chains and eyebolts should be used to suspend the unit. A paddle actuator is recommended (on the device's shaft) for use with finer materials and powder in order to ensure that the device tilts. The instrument is dust and waterproof to IP65, has M4 barrier electrical terminals and weighs 10 kg.
