Temane contract for B&W

June 2003 News

The significant instrumentation and electrical contract for the central processing facility (CPF) at the Temane gas fields in Mozambique has been awarded to B&W Instrumentation and Electrical in a joint venture with Electrotec LDA of Maputo. The $294 million CPF, located some 30 km north-west of Vilanculos, is an integral part of Sasol's $1,2 billion project to bring natural gas to South Africa by 2004.

With Temane having significantly higher pressure than Pande, gas will initially be gathered from 18 wells in this reservoir and later from a further 16 wells in the Pande field. Once the gas has been gathered, it will be transported to the CPF where it will be cleaned, dried and compressed before being delivered to the inlet flange of the transmission pipeline for transportation to downstream customers.

The securing of the prestigious instrumentation and electrical contract by B&W is indicative of the high standard of work completed by this company throughout the sub-continent as well as its commitment to work with local contractors in a joint venture in the country of their origin.

By working closely together with Electrotec, which is an electrical company specialising in reticulation, B&W will ensure the transfer of proven skills to the Mozambican company enabling it to tackle similarly demanding instrumentation and electrical contracts in the future. Due to the remoteness of the site and its distance from South Africa, B&W has established its own self-sufficient camp to cater for the team's personal and project requirements.

B&W has worked extensively throughout Africa in recent years to the extent that some 40% of the company's turnover now emanates from beyond South Africa's borders. According to B&W managing director, John Barrow, the company has achieved this notable growth in the face of fierce competition from international contractors as a result of its ability to compete price-wise and its acknowledged expertise of African conditions. "Furthermore, our accreditation with the ISO 9002 listing by the SABS plays an important part in our ability to handle prestigious African contracts," said Barrow.

B&W has successfully completed projects in Uganda, Tanzania, Lesotho, Mozambique and further afield. The company has a committed policy to assist the development of local infrastructures and provides on-site training to locals, equipping them with new skills that in turn enable them to seek opportunities on other projects. The company operates in the following market sectors: fuel and gas, mining, chemical, iron and steel, food and beverage as well as the paper industry. A large portion of its work encompasses process plants, power reticulation, small power and lighting related to these projects.
