Trouble-free supply of workpieces

May 2003 Sensors & Transducers

Festo's Checkbox Compact is well suited to applications that demand dependability in the feed and final inspection of small workpieces. It is available in two variants, the Classic as a basic unit with separate ejection of incorrectly orientated or defective workpieces, and the Compact PLC version.

The PLC variant model has all the functions of the basic unit and also facilities for communication with high-level controllers and the option of linkage to an encoder in applications with particularly high accuracy requirements. Checkbox is able to operate at high speed and with high resolution.

Checkbox Compact is the solution for all applications in which small workpieces are fed to assembly lines or automatic production machines. The product not only opto-electronically compares images of a model workpiece and a new workpiece but also extracts features from these images. These features are then weighted and compared in accordance with an automatically selected algorithm. Possible parameters include orientation (eg, screw head facing forwards or backwards), maximum diameter or workpiece height out of tolerance by 0,2 mm or more, length deviation of 0,2 mm or more, axial position, workpiece cross section and presence of a thread.

Both the Checkbox Compact Classic basic unit and the PLC version offer attractive features such as integration using the Festo plug and work principle and easy operation without the need for conventional programming, thanks to a teach-in function. In cases where the standard teach-in procedure reaches its limits due to the fact that contour differences are too small, the software programme CheckOpti comes into play. This allows fine-tuning of the detection process and is a fully developed, fully-tested and easy-to-use software tool.
