New low-cost ultrasonic flowmeter

May 2003 Flow Measurement & Control Products & Solutions

The Triton TX10 is a clamp on transit time flowmeter that was developed specifically to handle applications that have been traditionally viewed as difficult or unpredictable when using ultrasonic technology. These applications include very small diameter pipes, thin wall stainless steel, PVC and very large pipes with heavy linings or serious corrosion problems. The new instrument offers all the benefits of non-intrusive measurement plus greatly improved accuracy on a wide range of pipe materials and borderline applications.

Available for monitoring pipe sizes from 1 to 200", the Triton TX10 ultrasonic flowmeter measures flow velocities from -12 to +12 m/s. The fully programmable instrument uses only one set of transducers for all applications making service and parts availability a non-issue. Special transducers are available for liquid temperatures above 90 and up to 200°C. The Triton directly interfaces to a laptop PC via WinGateE Software, a Windows-based signal analysis and configuration program, which uses pull down menus and a graphical interface. This allows the operator to select virtually any pipe size and material and quickly identify signal problems by using the analysis portion of the program.

The instrument's clamp on sensors enable the TX10 to be installed and commissioned in a matter of minutes without any need for cutting or welding. Significantly increased power to the transducers permits accurate measurement of applications where insufficient signal was previously a problem. Where transit time measurement of non-metallic pipes such as concrete and asbestos or old cast iron and carbon steel pipes is desirable, the TX10 can be provided with insertion transducers. The transducers are made almost entirely of stainless steel and compact in their design, the sensors can be installed using the traditional hot tap method through 1,5" ball valves without interrupting flow.

The TX10 is provided with a 'no hassle' universal AC supply and will operate correctly with a supply anywhere from 85 to 265 V a.c. (optional 9 to 36 V d.c. is available). A two-line backlit LCD display can be programmed by the operator to indicate flow rate, signal strength, total flow, date and other selectable parameters.
