New production line for Consol Glass

April 2003 Motion Control & Drives

Consol Glass has just commissioned a new production line in order to increase its output of glass bottles. The line, manufactured by Active Enterprises in Centurion, is unusual in that it is the first all-stainless-steel construction that the company has built for Consol - that is, side frames, rollers, shafts, etc, all in stainless steel.

After the moulding process, the bottles pass to a Lehr machine, which tempers the glass bottles by controlled cooling. From that point to finished packaging, Active Enterprises has provided the conveyor system for the cold end, embodying a total of 110 SEW-Eurodrive type KA drives with ratings from 0,37 to 2,2 kW.

The SEW KA series are helical-bevel units, with right-angled hollow-shaft output. These drives provide a high degree of efficiency of over 96% in both torque directions and at all input speeds. Their torque range extends from 200 to 50 000 Nm.

The SEW-Eurodrive contract was worth over half a million rand, and the Active Enterprise contract in the region of R5 million. When asked about the Active contract, Owner Ben Huddle commented: "We are a specialist manufacturer in the conveyor business, up front as one of the market leaders, and we like to think that we retain our market share because of the quality of our workmanship, our service, and the equipment we provide. We cannot afford second best.

"As far as SEW-Eurodrive is concerned, we standardise on their drives for most of our output, and we look on them as a high-quality provider. We get excellent service. What more do we need?" The picture shows one of 110 of the SEW KA series drives on the new Consol production line.
