PC-based communication controller
April 2003
PLCs, DCSs & Controllers
A fully functional standalone controller for industrial automation and control is available from ProMicro. The ADAM-4500 provides an environment for controlling PC hardware with minimal development effort. Its built-in ROM-DOS lets users run standard or new PC programs produced by PC language development tools.
Two communication ports provide easy communication between the controller and other devices. COM1 can be configured for RS232 or RS485 communication via a jumper setting, while COM 2 is dedicated as an RS485 port allowing the controller to be used in a variety of applications. The user can download an application into the ADAM-4500's onboard Flash memory, while the ADAM-4500 is connected to an RS485 network, allowing it to control all modules.
Operating on a two-wire multidrop RS485 network with communication speeds of up to 115,2 Kbps, the ADAM-4500 is easily mounted onto a DIN rail or panel and accepts unregulated power sources between 10 to 30 V d.c.
The realtime clock in the controller ensures accurate time recording while the system operates, and the watchdog timer is designed to automatically reset the CPU in the event of a system malfunction.
The device provides 170 KB ROM for user application downloading and 234 KB of RAM for application operation. Its built-in ROM-DOS is an MS-DOS equivalent operating system that provides all the basic functions of MS-DOS, with the exception of BIOS. Application programs written in high-level languages such as C or C++ can run under ROM-DOS.
