NewElec’s KD protection relay, an expansion of the existing K range, has a compact design and includes management tools as well as additional protection features. It addresses special needs in the pumping applications market such as priming time requirements and can measure dry run by determining current or power factor.
The Dynamic Thermal Reset feature allows the relay to reset an overload fault in the fastest possible time by examining the thermal utilisation of the previous ten successful starts. This results in the shortest possible reset time delay that guarantees a successful re-start, while maintaining complete thermal protection of the motor.
By measuring power factor, the relay can respond faster to start stall conditions and load loss detection, with quicker trip times on short circuit faults occurring on power cables feeding the motor. The earth insulation lock-out feature meets new safety requirements. The starting circuit is automatically disabled if the insulation integrity of the cables supplying the motor or the motor windings is compromised. Instantaneous or IDMT earth leakage tripping curves in the range 30 to 1000 mA are available.
Freely available software includes management tools that permit the downloading of the previous 2000 events as well as a separate listing of the last 60 faults. The latter includes time, date, voltage present and circuit interruption time. NewElec has also included a real-time recorder for fault analysis and a training simulator for training centres.
