After more than a decade of involvement in the power industry, Endress+Hauser has something of a reputation as a leading supplier of solution-designed instrumentation for power plants internationally.
The company offers a range of technologies to meet the power and energy industry’s application requirements. Its products and expertise cover all types of power plants, including steam (coal, gas and oil), combined cycle gas turbine, waste-to-energy, hydro and nuclear. Instrumentation for level, pressure, flow, temperature and analysis, are manufactured to high quality standards for consistent performance and compatibility.
An instrument worthy of specific mention is the Levelflex M.
Levelflex installed in a bypass chamber (levelflex bypass)
Displacement systems have been used in the past for bypass level measurement. Guided radar devices (TDR), such as the Levelflex M, provide an optimum solution for such measuring tasks and offer significant cost benefits. Measurement difficulties arising from vacuum conditions – or erroneously reduced level indications caused by post-vaporisation and foaming, are avoided. The Levelflex M FMP40 reduces inaccuracies in measurements by working almost independently of medium properties. This instrument would typically be used in the main condenser, low pressure preheater and feedwater. In higher process temperatures, the high pressure preheater and in the boiler drum, for example, a Levelflex M FMP4s should be employed. This instrument features gas phase compensation, which automatically corrects measuring errors.

Consequent development in signal processing and software has made the single, robust 16 mm rod the best solution for reliable, guided radar measurement. No spacers in the measuring range (as with coaxial probes) means no spacer-induced measuring errors. Installed in the bypass, the single-rod probe has the same high performance as a coaxial probe. This means that products with DK >1,4 (such as liquefied gases) can be measured reliably. Bypass outlets and welding seams up to 5 mm do not affect the measurement.
Microwave pulses are sent along the rod in the direction of the medium surface. The jump in DK (change of dielectric constant from atmosphere to medium surface) causes the high-frequency microwave pulses to be reflected to the receiver. With the propagation velocity known, the level is determined from the transit time of the pulses. The measurements are practically independent of medium and process properties, such as changes in density, conductivity values, change in medium, steam, gas overlay, and fluctuations in temperature.
Over 50 years of application know-how is available to help customers increase their process efficiency, reduce their production downtime and streamline their stockholding and logistics processes. Endress+Hauser also designs and implements turnkey solutions.
