Universal sensors: worlds apart

September 2007 Sensors & Transducers

Banner's World-Beam family of photoelectric sensors offers a complete solution to hundreds of sensing applications. Whether the requirement is for opposed sensing, retro reflective sensing, diffuse, convergent, background suppression, fibre-optic, laser or ultrasonic, there is a suitable model in the World-Beam range.

The Q12 ultra-miniature range (12 x 23 x 8 mm) is the smallest in the family. With its miniature size and broad range of operating modes, the self-contained Q12s suit a wide variety of applications in the materials handling, packaging, semiconductor and pharmaceutical industries. These units are available in opposed, fixed-field, polarised and non-polarised retro-reflective sensing modes. All units offer solid-state bipolar NPN/PNP outputs. This IP67 rated sensor is also available with a rugged sealed housing or PFA chemical-resistant jacket.

The QS18 was the first member of this sensor family. Easily the most versatile sensor available, the extremely affordable, high-performance units are available in all sensing modes including laser and ultrasonic. Standardisation is made possible with a single housing style and the ability to meet the requirements of hundreds of applications. The QS18 Expert series offers a single pushbutton TEACH mode sensor with an advanced microprocessor to differentiate between the two light levels received. Laser sensors feature tightly collimated sensing beams and extended ranges, so they can reliably detect extremely small objects or be used for precise positioning applications.

The QS30 series sensors are the most powerful World-Beam units. In the opposed mode the high power members of this series can achieve ranges of up to 215 metres or burn through the heaviest moisture, fog, dust and industrial contamination. This durable and powerful range is sealed up to a rating of IP69K. For additional durability in harsh conditions, the internal components are completely epoxy-encapsulated. Innovative circuitry results in a long range and immunity to optical crosstalk, electrical noise and sunlight interference. QS30s are available in all modes including laser and ultrasonic versions.
