Flow Measurement & Control

Electromagnetic flowmeter rated as a reference device

January 2005 Flow Measurement & Control

From a measurement technology view, Krohne's new Optiflux range of electromagnetic flowmeters was a highlight at the 2004 Interkama exhibition.

The new flowmeters, which have been subjected to close examination and appraisal by industry experts, provide significantly improved metrological properties. A unique converter for the range provides a single solution for all applications. The star feature, however, is the 3 x 100% diagnostics, which optimise performance.

Until recently, diagnostic analysis has meant device diagnostic, such as checking the micro-controller, or the memory. The Optiflux now incorporates all the process diagnostics specified in VDI/VDE/Namur 2650. This provides more information for the maintenance engineer - device status and the 'quality' of the measured value. There are pointers given to possible application errors, which can then be used for preventive maintenance to help avoid device and system failures.

Potential application problem areas monitored

Optiflux monitors potential application problems, such as gas entrainment and electrode corrosion, fouling and short circuit. The device can also detect low conductivity, media changes, partial filling, liner deformation, external magnetic fields, changes in flow profile and high process temperatures. Limit values can be set for these items so the Optiflux can be tailored to a specific application. With little experience a user can anticipate and prevent possible application problems.

Out-of-spec diagnostics

Out-of-spec diagnostics enables the Optiflux to sense, on-line and cyclically, whether it is still within specifications. By injecting a test signal the accuracy of the field current for generating the magnetic field and the device linearity are verified. By using one of the communication interfaces (eg, HART) and Krohne's Pactware operating tool, it is possible to view test results and print out verification certificates. This avoids time-consuming manual verification measurements. The usual device diagnostic functions are also provided, where microprocessors, software sequences, memory modules, temperature of the electronic equipment, and the outputs are all tested.

Wide field of application

Recent experience confirms the metrological properties of the Optiflux, Krohne maintains Optiflux sets the standards for all other competing meters. Modern technology has enabled the significant improvement to the measurement performance of the electromagnetic flowmeter. The results of this are particularly notable in areas where such flowmeters typically experience difficulties, for example, in the flow measurement of media with ultra-low conductivity, fast media changes with corresponding changes of the pH and measurement of media with high solids contents - found for instance in the paper industry.

The paper industry in particular, was one of the final areas for the AC-field electromagnetic flowmeters. The results from several applications in which the Optiflux was used in parallel with the AC-field electromagnetic flowmeter confirmed that in these instances the new device maintains its metrological superiority. Even the standard device meets the high requirements for accuracy and repeatability. Because of its extensive diagnostic facilities, is predestined for custody transfer applications and is certified to OIML.

Accurate and universal

Improved measuring equipment and highly effective shielding in the sensor have resulted in accuracies within 0,15% and - of more interest to the user - repeatability within 0,06% of the measured value. With only one signal converter, Optiflux covers many applications, including simple water measurements and those where corrosive or abrasive media are concerned. This simplifies engineering, procurement, training needs and stockholding, leading to cost savings for the user.

With the aid of a modular platform concept, four inputs and outputs are available in virtually every combination: whether Ex or non-Ex; passive or active; galvanically separated, as well as from each other - and of course in conformity with Namur.
