Optical sensing specialist continues innovative leadership

March 2004 Sensors & Transducers

Nothing is as insubstantial as a light beam, or as complex. Nevertheless, for all the sophisticated technology Telco applies to its sensors, they last just as the company does.

Telco is a Danish brand name manufacturer, founded in 1975 on the ability to design and produce hardwearing optical sensors capable of withstanding the most harsh and aggressive environments. The experience gained over the years has taken Telco into new industrial fields, so that today the company can offer total solutions over a broad range of applications. By remaining true to its core values, Telco has developed its success to build the market leading position that it now has. Telco works closely with its customers. Through great flexibility and close personal contact, the company prides itself in providing a total sensor concept.

Company mission - making sense of technology

Telco feels that it is a master of its craft, and is determined to keep taking sensor technology to new levels. The company aims to continue to set new standards in design and production.

Entrepreneurship

The business started with a new idea - producing sensors capable of withstanding the most aggressive environments on earth. Telco turned it into a success with strong business acumen, a lot of hard work and the commitment to pursue the original idea with confidence. Having no intention of ever becoming 'just another sensor manufacturer', Telco continually questions the ordinary to search for new, better ideas.

Innovation

One new idea is not enough, and Telco has never been complacent enough to believe that its original idea would carry itself indefinitely. Heavy investments in R&D initiatives have continued to provide the market with technologically advanced sensors.

Innovation applies to a lot more than developing new products. An ongoing commitment to better all aspects of the business has worked to optimise customer service. New ways in which sensors can enhance the everyday lives of people are continuously being sought.

Endurance

The philosophy behind Telco sensors is the reason why they function high up in tall buildings, deep underground in mines and through the thick, swirling dust of sawmills. The sensors are developed with the goal of being able to function relentlessly.

Teamwork - it makes sense

The Telco Team Network spans the globe - making the company's world a very small place. Telco teams provide 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week service.

The company spends a lot of time training teams whose sales engineers provide the customers with day-to-day service. Telco works closely with its teams to guarantee that the standards of commitment and philosophy are delivered to its customers, globally. The teams are dedicated to the success of their company as a whole, and as a result the customers are guaranteed high quality services alongside technologically advanced, durable and hardwearing products.

Making sense of technology

Telco sensors are manufactured in-house by skilled employees - together with advanced automated production equipment. The strictest quality standards guarantee that both components and the finished product have undergone comprehensive quality inspections at each production stage. Telco's wide range of sensors are used for counting, sorting, measuring, positioning and detecting within, but not limited to, industries including: steel, wood, packaging, material handling, bottling, agriculture, carwash, elevators, escalators and automatic doors. Telco sensors are tolerant of hostile environments and are consequently among the most versatile on the market - with a three-year worldwide warranty. Qualified representatives worldwide are ready with stock for just-in-time delivery - as well as technical and on-site application support.

High performance light curtain

Typical of the sort of product that Telco produces is its high performance SpaceGuard SG1 light curtain. This light curtain is an advanced series for the protection of passing passengers in demanding elevator applications.

A complete system consists of a self-contained multibeam infrared transmitter (SGT) and a receiver (SGR). Control circuitry, electronics and optical components are integrated into the detector profiles enabling direct connection to a door controller or lift operator without the need of a separate power supply/controller unit.

Two models are available: a high-performance 40-channel model, with 194 cross scanning beams and a cost effective 20 channel model with 94 cross scanning beams, both of which are housed in a sturdy aluminium, slimline, 9,8 mm profile with an active height of 1 800 mm, 4 m sensing range, 10 to 30 V d.c. supply voltage with either a NPN or PNP transistor output. The latest optical components ensure a dense sweeping curtain of cross scanning beams until the fully closed position of the elevator car doors in both static and dynamic installations.

No on-site set-up or adjustments required. The SG1 series will automatically adjust to its operating conditions and surroundings during and after installation, thus achieving an optimal uniform performance by automatically compensating for misalignment and contamination during operation.

When the time-out feature is enabled, up to four non-adjacent channels may be ignored if obstructed for 60 seconds or more. If a time-out channel resumes operation, the time-out function will automatically be cancelled 3 seconds after re-establishment, ensuring safe and reliable operation until the vandalised unit is replaced. A 24 V d.c. PNP alarm output, which is activated in case of system failure or time-out, and IP 67 epoxy encapsulation, are optional. SG1s offer high EMC performance and exhibit strong immunity to high levels of ambient light.
