The latest version of the MELSEC System Q controller system from Mitsubishi Electric is a universal and versatile automation platform that covers a broad range of modern automation tasks. This powerful multiprocessor system was originally introduced just two years ago. In its newest embodiment it now also features full motion controller functionality plus integrated IT technology, full-featured PC modules and the useful Online Change function. Added versatility is provided by the new Soft PLC mode, which is ideal for less time-critical control applications, and the addition of the new Q00J, Q00 and Q01 low-end CPUs to the controller family. All these features make the System Q the ideal choice for present and future industrial needs.

System Q for integration and modularity

With its flexible multiprocessor technology System Q offers a huge range of versatile configuration options. You can install up to four CPUs in each system, choosing freely from a range of two motion CPUs, two PC CPUs and eight logic CPUs - that is over 100 genuine different permutations for individual applications. Up to four logic CPUs with different performance characteristics and multiprocessing support can share the control load of your tasks, and the modular hardware architecture can be adapted to the structures of your software engineering instead of vice-versa. When you change the CPU configuration you just replace the processor units - you can always keep the platform, module rack and the peripherals. Easy system set-up and diagnostics is guaranteed by among other things, a serial port, a USB port and support for Ethernet access.

In the System Q family, integration and modularity are paramount. All the CPUs can communicate directly with each other and the other components in the system. The system may be expanded quickly and easily by replacing or adding CPU modules, creating new configurations as applications become more demanding and complex. More memory may be added for larger programs and more data storage space (up to 32 MB per CPU).

New low-end CPUs for more flexibility

The addition of the new Q00J, Q00 and Q01 low-end CPUs to the product range makes the MELSEC System Q more versatile. These inexpensive modules with all the basic features of the System Q are designed for users who need an entry-level solution for less complex applications. Upgrading for more demanding tasks is always an available option - simply by replacing or adding plug-in CPU modules.

Full motion controller functionality

Q Motion Controller CPUs may be integrated in an existing platform. The new motion CPUs and a powerful SSCNET motion bus give users more flexibility for their machines, less down time, improved throughput and thus shorter production cycles.

Up to three 8/32-axis motion CPU modules may be installed in the System Q, enabling synchronisation up to 96 servo axes with a single system. This modular motion controller functionality is particularly useful in mechanical engineering applications, machine tools, printing and paper processing machines and in modern packaging and food processing machines - everywhere where it would be advantageous to replace mechanical line shafts with virtual electronic equivalents. This eliminates the need for costly mechanical refitting of the machines - the motion CPU handles all the projects and products electronically, administering them in a recipe system.

In combination with the dynamic Mitsubishi MELSERVO motors and the MELSERVO servo amp family, Mitsubishi's System Q is also suitable for applications in the IT and semiconductor industries. The compact, modular Q Motion system can handle the entire manufacturing process, from oxidation/diffusion and wafer sampling to bonding, moulding and the final testing of the finished microchips.

Encoder, servo input and pulse generator cards may be added to configure a powerful high-end motion control system. The programming software package for the Q Motion Controllers can import all programs developed on an A Motion Controller to the new system. Mitsubishi Electric also produces a virtual graphical software package for the Q system that makes it easy to program the synchronisation of individual servo axes.

The Q Motion controller can be programmed via the 5,6 Mbaud high-speed SSCNET, a 12 Mbaud USB port or a standard RS232 port.

Complete PC modules

The two PC CPU modules for System Q combine the Windows world with PLC technology. In their new, improved form they are complete PCs without any 'ifs and buts'. Fitted with notebook Celeron processors they meet all industrial demands for quality and reliability. The integration of a full PC in the System Q makes it possible to achieve fast access to peripherals and any other CPU modules installed. The operating systems - Windows NT, 2000 and NT Embedded - are each available in two different versions with up to 128 MB RAM, two 5 GB hard disks, cache memory, IDE controller, 2 MB VGA graphics adapter, PCMCIA slots, USB ports, serial ports and on-board Ethernet.

Computing-intensive applications can now be handled by the PC module. It may also be used to run process visualisation software, or to log high-speed processes and store the acquired databases. The supplied drivers support high-level language programming of both components and the entire system in C++ or Visual Basic. All this significantly reduces data handling overheads and the engineering costs as compared to traditional solutions with slow bus systems. Troubleshooting is also quicker for service technicians with the help of the diagnostics LEDs on the PC module.

Soft PLC for System Q

The new SX controller turns the PC into an IEC 1131 control component that can interact with configurations with logic CPUs. This 'Soft PLC' enables the user to allocate control tasks to the individual CPU types. In fact, when the tasks are not time critical, the System Q's Soft PLC may be run at the same time as running other Windows applications.

Powerful IT functions

System Q is also designed to function as the service point in the production process, with integrated IT technologies for global access to the maintenance and service functions of the controller systems. This Ethernet functionality enables the implementation of powerful remote maintenance and diagnostics functions and the sending of automated error messages via e-mail or to mobile phones with SMS text messaging. The system can be configured to send alarm and status messages to up to 16 users. You can also send or download automated user-configured service requests and reports and monitor the status of the system via the Internet or a local intranet.

The GX IEC Developer programming software package

GX IEC Developer makes System Q even more efficient. This high-end programming software package is much more than an IEC 1131.3 programming and documentation system. Powerful interactive tools guide the user through the entire system parameter configuration process. A highly informative graphical representation of the application structure is available right from the start, even in the early program-planning phase. Special testing and debugging tools make commissioning easy and provide invaluable information on the current status of the system.
