Flow Measurement & Control

Flowmeter for hydrocarbon liquid measurement applications

September 2001 Flow Measurement & Control

The BiRotor Plus meter is a volumetric flow-measuring device designed for the accurate measurement of petroleum liquids in a variety of applications. This double case meter combines the rugged durability and long service life of the traditional BiRotor meter with the improved accuracy and pulse output associated with today’s most sophisticated devices.

Utilising single or dual outputs, with two nonwetted pick-offs mounted 90° out of phase, the BiRotor Plus complies with API Level B pulse output standards. Output signals are amplified and shaped by a preamplifier mounted directly on the meter for transmission to accessories such as totalising counters, digital readout devices, provers and other control equipment and instrumentation.

The inherent balanced rotor design makes the meter resistant to shock loads on the mechanism resulting from the shifting of off-balance masses or the introduction of air slugs.

Typical applications include loading/unloading, batching, blending and inventory control of petroleum products where accuracy and repeatability are the deciding factors in meter selection. It is recommended for loading and unloading tankers, railcars or trucks, pipelines, aircraft refuelling, and general-purpose flow measurement.

Design features

* Superior performance: linearity ±0,10% or better over 10:1 flow range; repeatability ±0,01%.

* Double case construction avoids loss of calibration due to changes in pressure or temperature.

* New rotor profile provides high resistance to air slugs and entrained solids.

* No metal-to-metal contact.

* Dual pulse output meets Level B pulse security described in API manual, Chapter 5.5.4.4.

* Explosion-proof amplifier housing.

* Single or dual pulse output - nonwetted pickoffs.

* Reduced number of parts reduces maintenance requirements.

* Variety of readout instrumentation available.

* Horizontal or vertical mounting.

* Class I, Division 1, Group C & D, NEMA 4X, UL, cUL and CENELEC Eex d II B T6, CE, NTEP, CRN (Canada) and Industry Canada (Canada) approvals pending.

Performance-wise, linearity is ±0,10% or better over a 10:1 flow range, with a repeatability of ±0,01%.

Improvements include:

* Low maintenance compact design uses 50% less parts than traditional BiRotor meters. The reduction in the number of parts adds years to the lifetime of the meter and makes serviceability and maintenance easier.

* A reduction in pressure drop (compared with traditional BiRotor designs) expands the number applications available.

* The use of explosion-proof single or dual output pulse capabilities (over mechanical/electrical designs) allows greater accuracy with a wider range of available instrumentation than previous technology. The BiRotor Plus has a linearity of ±0,10% or better over 10:1 flow range and a repeatability of ±0,01%. Compare this to existing BiRotor designs and competitive meters?

* The use of a single rotor clearance adjustments reduces wear and improves the overall performance of the meter.

* The new rotor profile, plus the balanced rotor design that is fundamental to BiRotor design, provides this meter with enhanced capabilities to handle entrained air and off-balanced masses. Increased self-scating (requires no adjustment) clearances between the end of the rotor and the end plate (,005" traditional; ,125" BiRotor Plus) improves the ability of the BiRotor to handle entrained solids.

* Field serviceable parts make onsite repair convenient and easy and saves downtime without costly replacement parts.

* Replacement of O-rings and bearings are readily available as standard off-the-shelf items that are available worldwide.

* The BiRotor Plus has been designed to be more competitive in markets requiring meters of 3 and 4" sizes and for flow ranges within its capacity. It is more compact ... more precise in measurement performance ... and offers those features specific to loading rack and product transport facilities.

The BiRotor Plus flowmeter is a product of Daniel (Fisher-Rosemount Petroleum), which is locally represented by Alpret Control Specialists.
