SAIMC: From the president's desk

December 2012 SAIMC

The year 2012 is over and it has been an exciting ride! We are looking forward to 2013 and we know it will be an even better year for us. For those that have not heard the news, here is what we achieved in 2012:

* Celebrated our 55th birthday.

* Commissioned the First Lego League trailer.

* Reviewed our constitution.

* Revamped our website.

* Re-branding exercise on the go.

* Held our first Webinar with thanks to Technews.

* Joined the Automation Federation.

* Joined the Engenius program at ECSA, a campaign to grow and transform the engineering profession.

* Sponsored World Skills International: a vision to create a world where people can achieve the workplace skills they need to prosper and find fulfilment.

* A deal for our members with Golf for All with up to 30% discount on professional training. They are also willing to sponsor prizes at Golf Days.

* A deal for our members at Esquire for computers etc. at wholesale prices.

* A deal with our members at ISA where they can join for half the price and get up to twice the fees back with the first purchase of ISA training material.

What we are planning for 2013

This is something that the current vice president, Vinesh Maharaj, will discuss in the next president’s letter. On the cards is the possibility of bringing ISA trainers to South Africa to do train-the-trainer programmes and introduce the CAP and CCST certifications.

* CAP (certified automation professional): ISA certification as a CAP will provide a non-biased third-party assessment and confirmation of your skills as an automation professional. Automation professionals are responsible for the direction, definition, design, development/application, deployment, documentation and support, of systems, software and equipment used in control systems, manufacturing information systems, systems integration and operational consulting.

* CCST (certified control systems technician): CCST certifications are available at three levels and each level requires the successful completion of an examination. The CCST examination is only one requirement for certification. The candidate must also meet minimum requirements comprised of work experience and education. The programme is a two-fold certification: (1) all applicants must meet the requirements for the level of testing for which he/she applies and (2) pass the examination. If proper documentation is not provided then the applicant will not be certified. In order to test again, the applicant must reapply and resubmit the application fee.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our Christian members a blessed and peaceful Christmas. To all members, may you be rejuvenated over the holiday season and find ways to bring happiness to others.
