The production of metals and minerals involves a wide range of processes, from base metal leaching to high purity refining of precious metals. Mettler Toledo offers a range of measurement solutions that play an important role in many of these applications.
In virtually all base metal leaching methods, quality and yield can be significantly improved and operating costs reduced through continuous, real-time process analysis. Securing stable and robust leaching procedures requires in-line sensors that can withstand harsh conditions, allowing reliable process control. In the majority of the different leaching processes, the solubility of valuable components of an ore depends on a delicate balance between pH and redox potential. Mettler Toledo’s Intelligent Sensor Management (ISM) technology provides simultaneous measurement of pH and ORP. Continuous ISM predictive diagnostics allows for proactive maintenance so that accuracy for both parameters can be kept at an optimum level at all times.
Oxygen is needed as an oxidising agent to allow leaching to occur, but excessive running of compressors is a waste of energy. Mettler Toledo offers robust dissolved oxygen sensors based on polarographic technology for monitoring oxygen feed to the lixiviant as well as compressor use. Although the most widely used lixiviant is sulphuric acid, basic solutions are also employed. No matter which type is used, the starting concentration is easily controlled with the help of conductivity measurements. Mettler Toledo’s inductive conductivity sensors are suitable for use at temperatures up to 180°C and are resistant to aggressive chemicals and fouling.
The Ingold InPro 4260i is a combined pH electrode and temperature sensor designed for highly demanding chemical applications. It features Xerolyt Extra polymer reference electrolyte for precise pH measurement and longer lifetime, even in harsh industrial environments. The ISM functionality allows for ‘plug and measure’ and advanced diagnostics.
