Safety light curtains as linked versions

February 2015 Sensors & Transducers

Leuze MLC 500 safety light curtains are now also available as linked versions. Rigid L and U-shaped connections as well as variants with flexible cable connections can be used. The host-guest variants are Type 4 devices that provide reliable protection without dead space and with maximum system availability. A particular feature is that they are unusually slim (29 mm x 35 mm) and extremely sturdy due to the slightly set back front screens, reinforced side walls and metal end caps. Installation of the MLC safety light curtains is easy due to the large variety of possible mounting brackets.

The series includes the newest generation of sturdy Type 4 safety light curtains. Three function classes – Basic, Standard and Extended – enable the most efficient use of devices from simple standard applications to complex controlled special safeguarding processes. The devices can be used universally, due to metal end caps, a flexible fastening concept and the option of form-locking installation. There are also variants which have an AIDA-compliant pin assignment.

The basic version of the Type 4 safety light curtains provides the most important functions such as range reduction on the transmitter, reversible transmission channels, a LED display and automatic start/restart interlock. Features include the prevention of mutual interference of the sensors by selectable transmission channels and range reduction, if applicable.

The standard version of these Type 4 safety light curtains features a start/restart interlock (RES) and contactor monitoring (EDM) for increased performance, in addition to being simple to handle and integrate into existing systems. Handling is optimised due to function selection without PC as well as LED and seven-segment display with an integrated three-zone alignment aid.

Whenever additional control functions are required, the Leuze MLC 530 extended version is the perfect choice. It features five different operating modes, integrated muting function and three different scan modes. Device linking enables the construction of two-channel, contact-based safety circuits as well as serial connections of several devices with safety-related switching outputs (OSSD).

So-called host-guest devices enable the combination of access guarding or point of operation guarding with area protection. This makes it possible, for example, to eliminate additional measures such as guards to protect against stepping behind machines. Furthermore, the MLC HG devices offer all of the advantages of the MLC 500 series while MiddleGuest devices can be used as the middle segment of a three-link chain. The MLC 520 Ex series is certified for use in potentially explosive areas, namely Group II, Category 3, Zone 2 (gas) and Zone 22 (dust).
