Yokogawa’s Smartdac+ GX20W wireless paperless recorder

February 2015 Industrial Wireless

Plants use field devices to measure variables such as temperature, pressure, liquid levels, gas concentration, and vibration. With a field wireless system, communication between field devices and host monitoring systems is done wirelessly. Yokogawa’s Smartdac+ GX20W wireless paperless recorder facilitates the acquisition of data from locations that are inaccessible to recorders or where it is difficult to accommodate conventional wired devices.

The ISA100 wireless gateway function enables the GX20W to collect and record information from ISA100 wireless devices. The demand for field wireless devices has increased due to their installation cost efficiencies and the advantage of being able to place them in locations inaccessible to conventional wired devices. Plant facility monitoring systems often include recorders that collect and record measurement data from field devices, making the GX20W ideal for use in such systems. In addition to a maximum of 100 wired inputs, the GX20W can receive signals from up to 50 field wireless devices.

For safety reasons, recorders cannot be installed in hazardous areas. This necessitates the running of cables between field transmitters and recording devices at considerable expense. As the GX20W is able to wirelessly collect and record data from a remote location, the task of building a monitoring system with recorders for use in facilities with hazardous areas, is simplified. This includes chemical plants using inflammable organic solvents and pharmaceutical plants manufacturing active ingredients. Another benefit of installing the GX20W is that systems for monitoring equipment or small-scale processes can be built at low cost, as there is no need for wiring.

The GX20W displays data from wireless field devices, as well as measured data from I/O modules on the main unit in real time. It can ideally be used for monitoring boilers, coal yards, rotary furnaces, smoke control systems, and other facilities in plants for electric power, oil refining, petrochemicals, chemicals, iron and steel, pulp and paper, food, and pharmaceuticals.

The Smartdac+ next-generation data acquisition and control system was first announced in October 2012. The first two components of this system were the GX/GP series paperless recorders, the GA10 data-logging software, and GM data acquisition system. These support a wide range of data acquisition and control applications, including the monitoring of manufacturing processes and product performance evaluation testing.

Yokogawa continues to develop and provide new products and other solutions with the aim of helping its customers improve the efficiency of their manufacturing plants and other operations.
