Flow Measurement & Control

Summit 8800 by Krohne

November 2014 Flow Measurement & Control

Krohne’s Summit 8800 flow computer was developed for the oil & gas industry with functionality, ease of maintenance and ease of use in mind. Its modular design makes it economically advantageous in a broad range of applications as each unit can handle up to five measuring streams with cycle times of only a quarter of a second. It also offers:

* The selection of any combination of measured media: gas, liquid or steam.

* The ability to select a combination of units: metric and imperial for each stream.

* The choice of the flowmeter technology per stream.

The unit has six slots for optional cards allowing up to five additional I/O boards. The communication board combines one or two Ethernet ports with three serial ports. Each I/O board handles analogue and digital signals and has one serial port.

In addition to the CPU, each card has its own powerful 32-bit microprocessor. This combination guarantees high quality processors measurement operations without delay, distributing all the measurements at the hardware level and allowing the CPU to focus on calculations, charting and creating reports.

Powerful display and functionality

The most striking detail is the colour-touch-screen graphical display and navigation dial which improves operation. The touch screen may be used to select menu options or enter the parameters in any given language. The keyboard can be displayed in full alphanumeric or simply as numeric pad. With prices for oil and gas increasing in recent years, and considering the high cost of production, flow measurement is becoming an increasingly necessary task. Summit 8800 has been developed specifically for reliability, a differentiating feature being the flow-rate calculator function is a ‘hot-standby’ redundant flow computer in the field. This allows automatic switching from the primary to the backup flow computer while continuing to support processes such as PID control, sampling, etc.

With the advent of the need to integrate flow computers in the information technology infrastructure, creating and sending reports in electronic form is mandatory. Summit 8800 is able to generate and send reports (events, alarms, daily or hourly reports, etc.) as e-mail or html when connected to the Internet. In addition, reports can be sent to network printers or servers anywhere in the world. The built-in Internet browser allows access to the flow computer from any PC or mobile device connected to the network, with records of system information being sent automatically. The advantage of this is that the user is able not only generate a report with the required information, but also to configured the system to send directly, and as a consequence, never miss a critical report, or an important message.

Loop signature 29: Averaging or surge level control
Editor's Choice Flow Measurement & Control
There are many processes where it is undesirable for the load to suddenly change quickly, for example in the paper industry. Examples of level control have involved reasonably fast tuning. An example of a level loop tuned this way and responding to a step change in setpoint is given.
