Combination encoders with added functionality

February 2014 Sensors & Transducers

The latest add-on functionality in Leine & Linde’s 1000 series of combination encoders is the overspeed unit with programmable switching speeds. In heavy duty applications like steel plants it is common for an incremental encoder signal to be complemented with a separate relay output for overspeed indication. This is typically used to protect large motors and machines from breakdown.

The critical speed limit varies with the exact motor type and application. In the same plant there may therefore be a need for different overspeed configurations on different drives. The programmable overspeed gives great flexibility as the same unit may be supplied for different installations on the plant and programmed with specific settings after installation is made. Programming is done via USB and different switching speeds may be programmed for up to four separate relay outputs.

Leine & Linde also offers overspeed solutions for safety according to SIL or PL. For these applications an incremental encoder like the 800 series is installed together with an external overspeed safety unit certified for safe speed. The safety unit monitors drive related safety functions such as overspeed, standstill and direction, based on feedback from the encoder signal. These safety standards are mandatory for applications where personnel come in close contact with machines. With Leine & Linde’s solution an integrator can reach a safety level of category 4 (relay outputs) or category 3 (semiconductor outputs) and PLe of DIN EN ISO 13849-1 (2008-12) and SILCL 3 of DIN EN 62061 (2005-12).
