Enhanced steel cord inspection system

March 2013 Sensors & Transducers

The Steelcord Inspection System SIS XP from Roland Electronic uses magnetic induction technology to examine steel corded belts in real-time. Suitable integration into cutting or splicing stations allows for the early detection of faults and quality defects inside of body ply and breaker liners in the tyre industries, thus reducing reject production as the faults can be repaired immediately thereby saving the manufacturer from scrapping entire tyres and improving the general quality of tyres produced.

With up to 16 sensors, each with an active sensor area of 100 mm, the entire width of the belts of up to 1500 mm can be examined at full production speed. The sensors are of a non-contact, non-ionising variety which lowers running costs as the sensors have very little wear and no additional equipment is required to comply with the law on ionising radiation. Advanced signal processing allows for the measurement results from each of these sensors processors to be transferred via high-speed Ethernet to a full graphic real-time display. This permits for the immediate detection of fault situations with the graphical touch screen display giving a defect location with 1 mm resolution and an event recorder tracking all the faults. The addition of digital signal analysis capabilities now affords the user the opportunity to distinguish between the different fault types as well.

Typical calendar faults which can be detected are missing wires, horizontal regularity faults, vertical regularity faults and crossed, jumped wires or loose wires. Splicer faults include overlapping splice, open splice and asymmetric splice with one side open and one side overlapping. It is therefore possible to monitor the quality of output from the calendar, edge trimmers and splicers.

With 60 installations worldwide and customers such as Goodyear South Africa, the successful application of this technology is field proven.
