Level Measurement & Control

Innovative features for solids measurement

February 2013 Level Measurement & Control

The new guided radar sensor from Vega, the Vegaflex 82, has innovative features offering a new level of quality when it comes to reliability and measurement certainty for bulk solids, even for applications in silos up to 75 metres high and for solids with low reflectivity.

Thanks to its new automatic probe end tracking function, the Vegaflex 82 can measure the level of bulk solids with a low dielectric constant of 1,1 with unprecedented reliability. When there is an increasingly unreliable product signal, the sensor switches automatically to the stable probe end tracking signal, which is always proportional to the level. This guarantees accurate, consistent readings, especially with critical products such as plastic powder. The sensor is thus able to adapt to changing conditions, delivering an even higher quality in measurement certainty and reliability.

If large amounts of build-up form on the measuring probe, another innovative feature takes effect – dynamic false echo suppression. In such applications the signal processing system adapts itself automatically to the process conditions and increases measurement certainty.

Standard features for universal use

The Vegaflex 82 is suitable for level measurement in almost all bulk solids. It delivers reliable measurement data in process temperatures from -40 to 200°C and process pressures from -1 to 40 bar. Its applications range from large-volume bunkers to 75 metre high silos, and from light, fine powders to coarse, heavy gravel. As a member of the plics family, the sensor combines all the advantages of Vega’s sensor concept: robust designs in cable and rod versions, standardised process fittings and a wide variety of housing and electronics versions.

The sensors are supplied already calibrated. For specific settings on site, the quick-start function guides the user through the setup menus in a few easy-to-follow steps. The Vegaflex 82 is equipped with asset management functions according to NE 107 for simple diagnostics and preventive maintenance. Besides the level, the instrument also continuously transmits the dielectric constant of the bulk material, giving an indication of its moisture content. In addition, measurement data, events and echo curves are stored permanently in the sensor electronics. The sensors have necessary approvals such as ATEX, FM and SIL2/3 as a matter of course.
