Drive technology for the agricultural sector

As South Africa’s agricultural sector continues to increase production and strengthen its position in export markets, the reliability and efficiency of the drive systems powering farming and processing operations have become increasingly important. From centre pivot irrigation systems and grain handling facilities to packhouses, feed mills, wineries, fruit processing plants and automated packaging operations, modern agriculture depends on dependable mechanical and electrical infrastructure. Any unplanned equipment failure during planting, harvesting, handling, storage or processing can result in costly downtime, reduced throughput, product losses and missed delivery commitments.

According to Dwayne Jacobs, branch manager at SEW-EURODRIVE Cape Town, agricultural businesses are increasingly looking beyond individual components and investing in technologies that improve the overall performance and reliability of their operations.

“Agricultural producers are under constant pressure to maximise productivity while controlling operating costs,” Jacobs says. “Reliable drive technology is fundamental to achieving these objectives, because every stage of the agricultural process depends on equipment performing consistently, particularly during time-critical harvesting and processing periods.”

SEW-EURODRIVE supplies a comprehensive range of geared motors, industrial gear units, variable speed drives/VSDs, and automation solutions engineered for demanding agricultural environments. The system continuously monitors critical drivetrain components and provides real-time information on equipment health, enabling maintenance teams to identify developing issues before they result in costly failures.

The company’s MOVILINK Digital Data Interface technology further enhances equipment visibility by enabling direct digital communication between the motor and inverter through a single interface. This provides valuable operating information including temperature, speed, operating hours and diagnostic data, while simplifying commissioning, reducing wiring complexity and supporting more effective maintenance planning.

“Predictive maintenance is becoming increasingly important in agriculture,” Jacobs explains. “Instead of reacting to unexpected failures, producers can schedule maintenance around production requirements, significantly reducing the risk of disruptions during critical harvesting and processing windows.”

Energy efficiency is another priority for agricultural businesses facing rising electricity costs. SEW-EURODRIVE’s VSD technology enables motors to operate only at the speed required by the application, reducing unnecessary energy consumption while improving process control, minimising mechanical stress and extending equipment life.

Automation is also playing a growing role in agricultural productivity. Integrated control systems provide operators with greater visibility across multiple processes, allowing production to be synchronised more effectively while improving throughput, maintaining product quality and responding more quickly to changing operational demands.
