PSA-Solar Con and PSA Technology Group

March 2016 System Integration & Control Systems Design

In operation since 2008, PSA Technology Group provides a complete turnkey process automation control systems service, from design to implementation, as well as after-sales service and support. The supply of software, PLCs and scada systems form an important part of the company’s offering.

In April 2015, Solar Con, led by Dieter Dilchert, joined forces with Mark Austin’s PSA Technology Group to form PSA-Solar Con. “This move brings together the market leading skills of PSA Technology Group and Solar Con, a well-known player in the solar industry for the past 10 years. Solar Con has completed a number of projects that include project design, installation, commissioning and training,” says Eddie Wepener, marketing manager of the company.

Diverse supply base

“In addition, in order to strengthen our supply base, we have signed a partnership agreement with Hycube in Germany to represent it as an agent in South Africa. Hycube is similar to Teslar, but we provide additional functions like integrated inverter and energy management via the Internet. These units are manufactured according to DIN VDE 01000-712 and carry a 10-year guarantee. To provide a complete solution in the photovoltaic (PV) industry, we also have supply agreements with Solar Maxx (IBC) for PV projects and Schneider for off-grid and on-grid inverters,” adds Wepener.

Training and operations

The company has a staff of 21, of which eight are technicians and four are engineers. Training forms an important part of the service offering to clients, and includes both employee training and client training. Employees are exposed to product specific training by Siemens, Burkett, ABB, IFM, Endress+Hauser, Schneider, and distributor training for Proleit, while clients receive on-site training during commissioning and installation as well as post-installation, depending on the requirements.

In addition, the Solarcon Energy Academy offers a comprehensive range of certified training courses on photovoltaics and wind energy. All courses are registered with the SAIMC with CPD points awarded on completion, thereby equipping learners to design and implement PV and wind energy systems, as well as the numerous data communication options.

PSA-Solar Con is the sole agent for Hycube and a distributor for Maxx Solar (IBC), Schneider, Microcare, Imeon Energy and Deltec Batteries. Its vision and mission is to serve its customers based on years of excellence, thereby providing best-in-class, in small, medium and large business offerings, in both professional industrial automation as well as solar PV solutions from concept to delivery in sub-Saharan Africa.

Current predominant markets include beverages, food, dairy, wastewater management, environment, manufacturing, and alternative renewable energy solutions. Wepener points out that the company’s plans for the future include expansion into the alternative renewable energy markets, as well as increasing partnerships with suppliers and industry-specific leaders to offer a wide range of products and services.

Notable projects include Chill Beverages’ greenfield plant in Stellenbosch, Namibian Breweries in Windhoek, Heineken brewery plant upgrade in Kinshasa, and the BASF chemical plant in Gauteng, as well as ongoing projects with South African Breweries, Danone South Africa and Tiger Brands.

A number of maintenance contracts are available for clients, including planned and unplanned service maintenance and PV maintenance for the Department of Environmental Affairs, Tshwane.
