Reliable radar level measurement

December 2013 Level Measurement & Control

Since the successful launch of the Micropilot radar level device more than 20 years ago, Endress+Hauser has installed more than 300 000 radar instruments in a wide range of applications across the globe. The company has now launched the new Micropilot FMR5x range with improved reliability of signal analysis and a new data management system for quick and easy information sharing and replacement.

Designed for use in the chemicals, oil and gas, life sciences, food, water and energy industries, the Micropilot FMR5x range includes the FMR50 (liquids) and FMR56 (solids) for use in basic applications, right through to the FMR51 (liquids) and FMR57 (solids) for use in high pressure or high temperature processes.

The innovative multi-echo tracking system overcomes the problem of obstacles in the radar beam, for example installed instruments or heating coils, that can interfere with the signal and give false readings. This improved method of analysing signals means that obstacles are marked and tracked along with the level, guaranteeing accurate measurements to within 2 mm.

Another advantage of the new radar instrument is the HistoROM data management function that allows fast and easy commissioning, maintenance and diagnostics. As well as continuously backing up all relevant data, it allows main electronics to be quickly and simply replaced by hand. The instrument also offers intuitive and user-friendly menu guidance, reducing the cost of training, maintenance and operation.

Safety is always a top priority at Endress+ Hauser. The hardware and software comply with IEC 61508 and can be used in homogeneous redundancy up to SIL3. In practice this means that Micropilot always checks that it is working properly and safely by continuous self-monitoring. Two instruments are used at the same measuring point and if one of the two detects an unsafe condition, the instrument changes to an alarm condition. This reduces the risk of an unsafe process condition going unnoticed. As an extra safety net, the recurring check or proof test can be started easily either by attaching an engineering tool or directly from the control room, ensuring the instrument maintains its reliability.
