Microwave detectors for lighting control
December 2011
Sensors & Transducers
The project involved the use of CP’s MWS1 and MWS3 microwave detectors to provide dimming and absence and presence detection in offices and corridors in order to improve energy efficiency.
Presence detectors were installed in all office spaces to ensure that lighting was not used unnecessarily. With each presence detector controlling a predefined lighting zone, the users are now able to achieve control over their workspace while ensuring that occupied areas are adequately lit. The system also provides daylight linking on the desks closest to windows so that illumination can be dimmed in those areas when sufficient natural daylight is available.
With a detection range of up to 30 metres, the wall mounted microwave sensor is ideal for controlling illumination over large areas, particularly corridors. The MWS-3 Multi-Sense is designed for flush mounting in open plan areas, corridors and aisles. Unlike fixed head sensors, the MWS-3 utilises an adjustable sensor head to provide a unique presence detection capability. By changing the angle of the sensor head, different detection patterns are achieved for variations in area coverage, with a reduced number of sensors required.
The key factors in the specifications for the lighting management system were energy savings, ease of installation with minimum disruption, proven reliability and cost competitiveness. Further benefits were achieved through the longer lamp life achieved as a result of lower usage, which resulted in extended re-lamping cycles and reduced maintenance costs.
