SAIMC: Tshwane branch

October 2017 SAIMC

At the August technical evening, Swagelok, represented by Kyle Collet and Reino van Rensburg, provided some valuable insight into how to go about ‘Safe valve selection’.

Topics discussed included:

• What the key factors are in choosing a valve i.e. pressure, temperature, flow, etc.

• Valve functions i.e. shut-off, flow control, directional flow, pressure and flow protection.

Interestingly the presentation also included some application examples to help explain and understand the topic. A very important aspect related to oxygen valve types/applications and featured ignition risks associated to oxygen. Some practical calculations were also discussed.

Other feedback

First Robotics SA: Following the virtual meeting the MoU was drawn up and issued for comment/signature by both parties. Due diligence will shortly be undertaken by the SAIMC, and following signing of agreement, the business case will be investigated.

Manufacturing Indaba: A follow up meeting took place towards end of August with Ms Liz Hart and the next step is drafting the MoU given numerous synergies which exist between parties. This should allow SAIMC to leverage the extensive networks, including the DTI.

TUT Tshwane: Jurie Weidemann recently gave a presentation on the SAIMC to a sizeable audience. The branch thanks management and senior lecturers for helping to make this happen.
