Control valve training initiative

July 2002 Training & Education

Control valves are the final and most influential element in the control loop. As part of Fisher Control's ongoing commitment to its southern African process industry customers, its long standing representative Alpret Control Specialists is launching a series of intensive courses at its key facilities in Durban and Johannesburg starting on 12 August this year. Sizing, selection as well as control valve maintenance will be presented in two separate courses.

The first course

'Control valve sizing and selection' is an intensive two-day practical course designed to assist engineers and technicians responsible for sizing selection and application of control valves, actuators and positioners. The introduction topic will look at industry codes such as ANSI and the ANSI/FCI leakage classes. This will immediately lead on to selection of characteristics, for correct loop gain, and styles of valve per application including trim options for globe valves. Control valve performance and predictive maintenance through the use of performance related hardware and software shall also be discussed. The use of proprietary software will be demonstrated and practiced and each student will receive as part of the course, a FirstVue valve-sizing package.

Severe service applications (flashing, noise and cavitation) form an integral part of the course, which will also teach correct selection of noise attenuation devices and factors to consider in process design.

Course two

Also of two days duration, is aimed at those involved in control valve installation, calibration and troubleshooting. Participation in this course will give the delegate a deeper insight into the importance of the use of correct maintenance procedures when maintaining control valves. The course is ideal for technicians and engineers in maintenance and supervisory positions for day-to-day maintenance as well as planned shutdowns.

The course facilitator is Alpret's chief control valve engineer Peter Underhill. Peter has 25 years experience with control valves in both South Africa and the UK. He has been accepted as a certified instructor by Fisher Control USA in the fields of control valve engineering and control valve maintenance.
