Schubert & Salzer valves in packaging applications

August 2017 Valves, Actuators & Pump Control

Angle seat valves and sliding gate valves from Schubert & Salzer are used in the production and filling of soft and alcoholic beverages (e.g. beer), milk products and mineral water.

Steam is used for heating, sterilising, autoclaving, and pasteurising. Sliding gate valves are particularly suitable to control this media. Users appreciate the significantly lower energy consumption due to the short valve stroke of 6-8 mm. The lesser wear in the valve actuators and in the packing resulting from this, provide substantially longer service lives. The compact construction of sliding gate valves alleviates installing, removing, or repairing them. Worn off parts can be exchanged in just a few steps. Kvs coefficients, characteristics or safety setting can be adapted just as quickly.

Sliding gate valves are used also for supply media like water, air, CO2 or nitrogen, at very high or very low temperatures, high pressures or, if fast switching actions, high control precision or best positioning ratio are needed. Angle seat valves are used mainly where a reliable sealing is required, particularly in small nominal sizes and at low operating pressures. Naturally, the company’s sliding gate valves come with a CRN approval, the GOST-R certificate (provided with angle seat valves also) and are suitable for potable water applications.

Naturally, the standards demanded in the food and beverage industry are high: Low germ and sterile processes are needed for the filling and mixing of foodstuffs and beverages and for the cleaning (CIP/SIP) of filling and production equipment.

When it comes to controlling liquids and gases, the Schubert & Salzer hygienic right-angled control valve and the aseptic right-angled control valve are the first choice. Where media need to be shut off, the hygienic right-angled valve, the aseptic right-angled valve and the angle seat valve in its hygienic version (designed with minimal dead space) are suitable. The latter is used mainly in keg cleaning and in filling plants.

Valves made of stainless steel 1.4404 or 1.4435 can be supplied with a roughness of up to less than 0.25 μm and with the connections typically used in that industry. Furthermore, Schubert & Salzer‘s valves are known for being easy to clean and simple to maintain.

Schubert & Salzer’s positioners are available for medium control. They can be obtained also with permission under ATEX 94/9/EG up to Zone 0.

The design and materials used for Schubert & Salzer’s hygienic and aseptic valves conform, depending on the sealing material used, to the strict FDA guidelines and hold the USP Class VI certificate. Schubert & Salzer’s aseptic valves are certified under EHEDG.
