This year’s NDA event at Event City in Manchester hosted over 1500 visitors and was a particularly successful day for everyone involved at Omniflex, which was announced winner of the 'Best example of Innovation by an SME' award for 2016. The award was received for the Innovative Radiological Protection Node (RPN1), which was designed to simplify the process of gathering data from Lab Impex, Canberra and other radiation monitors. By combining all of the required features in a standard COTS product, the Teleterm RPN1 provides trouble-free installation and set-up. Within minutes, the data from radiation monitors can be read on radiological surveillance scada systems. Benefits include cost savings over conventional radiological monitoring systems, reduced commissioning time and the elimination of cable costs.

In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
