Aegex IS tablet achieves dust and fibres certifications

September 2016 IS & Ex

The Aegex10 intrinsically safe tablet has attained the highest North American certification for protection against dust and fibre flyings.

The Aegex10 was the first Windows 10 tablet to gain global certifications for ATEX and IECEx Class 1 Zone 1, UL913 Class 1 Division 1 and CSA 22.2 part 157 areas of hazardous locations. These approvals made it the first Windows 10 tablet globally certified for HazLoc operations where high concentrations of flammable gases, vapours or dusts are likely to occur in normal operation, such as in oil and gas, chemical manufacturing, and other industries with highly explosive environments.

The Aegex10 has now been granted approvals for UL913 Class II Division 1 hazardous areas where high concentrations of potentially combustible dusts are present, and UL913 Class III Division 1 hazardous areas where easily ignitable fibres or flyings are present throughout industrial operations. Thus, the tablets are now certified UL913 Class I, II, III Division 1 a-g. Typical mobile devices cannot operate in these conditions, as they generate up to seven times the amount of energy needed to ignite a spark. The Aegex10 is intrinsically safe, meaning it is designed to manage its energy generation to prevent ignition.

The tablet’s new UL certifications guarantee it is safe to use in dust-filled or fibre-filled environments, like agriculture, food processing, textiles and other manufacturing operations where such conditions exist.

“The Aegex10 patent-pending design was implemented to meet the most stringent hazardous requirements and certifications defined by UL913, ATEX and IECEx 60079. Aegex Technologies’ Aegex10 CI, CII, CIII D1 tablet provides our customers with a cost-effective and versatile device that ensures the safety of their most precious resources, their employees,” said Andre Fournier, Aegex’s director of IP portfolio and licensing.

“The Aegex10’s Class II and Class III certifications open even more opportunities for organisations to safely access real-time data and communications from within hazardous areas,” he added.

UL913 is the standard for intrinsically safe and associated apparatus for use in Class I, II, III Division 1, hazardous (classified) locations in accordance with the requirements of the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70. Equipment intended for use in such locations must be certified according to this standard.
