Discharge limits under control

July 2016 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Electroplating and tanning companies generate contaminated wastewater that must be treated before it can be released into the sewage system. These companies often operate their own wastewater treatment plants to reduce the contaminants to limits that meet the stipulated discharge values. To achieve these values for chromate, they require absolutely reliable, precise chromate (Cr(VI)) monitoring and full documentation of the measured values. Liquiline System CA80CR offers optimum support for these companies. It uses the standardised colorimetric diphenylcarbazide method ensuring compliance with discharge regulations. The analyser also features detailed logbooks that provide continuous documentation of the chromate values.

Detailed monitoring of chromate reduction

Chromium VI compounds are highly toxic and must not end up in surface water under any circumstances. Liquiline System CA80CR enables effective online monitoring of the treatment process and thus allows precise supervision of the integrity of ion exchangers and membrane filtration systems. It also supports optimised dosing of reducing agents such as sodium hydrogen sulphite and helps plant operators to rectify process disturbances remotely via its advanced diagnostics using modern communication protocols. Liquiline System increases the safety of the chromate reduction process.

Precise chromate measurement in potable water

Liquiline System CA80CR also offers waterworks the security that no chromium(VI) will end up in the distribution network and supports them in providing detailed documentation of the chromate values to the water authorities. The World Health Organization (WHO) stipulates a total chromium limit of 0,05 mg/l for potable water.

Low reagent consumption and simplified maintenance

Operating cost of a colorimetric analyser is dependent on the consumption of reagent and calibration standards over its lifetime. Liquiline System is designed with highly precise dispensers for reagent dosing to guarantee reduced consumption. The reagents of Liquiline System CA80CR last up to 3,5 months at a measuring interval of 10 minutes. Automatic cleaning and calibration functions ensure that the analyser and its sample preparation work reliably and without manual intervention over a longer period of time. Maintenance tasks can be carried out easily and with minimal tools, reducing maintenance costs and increasing process uptime.

Easy operation and commissioning

Liquiline System shares the user-friendly operation that plant personnel already know from other online analysis parameters such as pH or turbidity, as it has the same hardware and software interfaces operating errors are virtually eliminated. The analyser can be easily upgraded to a complete measuring station by connecting Memosens sensors. Liquiline System then adopts the transmitter functions, which reduces the total number of devices in the plant. Memosens communication also allows full control of the sample preparation systems by the Liquiline System analyser, speeding up commissioning and operation. The CAT860 and CAT820 sample preparation systems are perfectly adapted to the rough conditions in industrial wastewater as they feature chemically stable membrane pumps and hoses and corrosion-resistant ceramic filters.

Liquiline System chromate analysers and sample preparation systems help managers of electroplating and tanning plants to comply with strict discharge limits and keep discharge fees under control, while making daily life easier for operators http://bit.ly/1oBJgiI.

At its peak in 1994, the energy generation capacity of the UK’s nuclear power stations was 12,7 GW across 16 plants. In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
