Electrical Power & Protection

Trustworthy phase rotation protection

November 2015 Electrical Power & Protection

Phase sequence protection is an important safety issue for motors. Reversing the phase sequence causes the motor to reverse its direction of rotation. This can cause serious damage and injury to personnel if, for instance, the motor is coupled to cutting equipment or conveyor belts.

To ensure that machinery does not rotate in the incorrect direction, the inclusion of phase rotation protection within a motor protection relay makes good sense. Many of NewElec’s motor protection relays offer this protection, which is achieved by measuring the incoming phase voltage. This makes it impossible to start the motor should the incoming phases be reversed. Some of the NewElec motor protection relays do, however, permit software settings that allow the motor to start by reversing the phase measurement settings. This enhancement dispenses with the need for the electrician to physically reverse the phase measurement inputs of the relay. Phase rotation protection is available with NewElec’s NewCode, MA, KD and KE motor protection relays.
