New FieldConnex components with an IQ

May 2015 Fieldbus & Industrial Networking

The latest product in the FieldConnex portfolio is the new FieldBarrier from Pepperl+Fuchs. The FieldBarrier delivers outstanding performance right from the start through intelligent load management, which prevents excessive inrush currents by activating outputs in sequence. If an overload is imminent during operation, then less critical loads are shed. In addition, the power supply is reduced to less than 1 mA in order to prevent excessive loads. Following the repair, the FieldBarrier automatically reactivates the output.

FieldConnex FieldBarrier: Seamless monitoring of the physical layer

The new FieldBarrier enables the physical layer to be monitored economically at the output for the first time. Any degradation in signal quality is reported to the diagnostic software in the control room via LEDs and the advanced diagnostic module (ADM). This innovative monitoring system is another step toward achieving maximum fieldbus transparency. The new FieldBarrier also features functions that were previously only offered by the Segment Protector: The device detects the special dynamics of signals caused by contact bounce, loose contacts or vibrating equipment, and can differentiate these from regular fieldbus signals. As a result, the FieldBarrier detects and isolates typical fault scenarios at every output. This applies even to elusive temporary faults such as those caused by the ingress of rainwater.

The system sets new standards when it comes to flexibility and geographical expansion. Up to three FieldBarriers with eight, 10, or 12 outputs can be operated per segment. What’s more, the compact 12-channel solution still offers sufficient space to thread and connect the cables easily. The new FieldBarrier is available in a preinstalled housing solution in a wide range of sizes, configurations and materials.

FieldConnex Segment Protector: Maximum intelligence in an ultra-compact design

The new Segment Protector offers proven progressive fault detection and a highly robust design. The compact aluminium housing is one of the smallest designs on the market and is perfect for confined spaces. Users can choose whichever connection type is required, including spring-type or screw terminals. Another new and convenient feature is the status LEDs, which are always visible from the outside thanks to the innovative housing design, thereby facilitating quick diagnostics at a glance. This ensures optimal monitoring of the physical layer, while maintenance personnel are given ideal support and plant availability is increased significantly.

FieldConnex Temperature Multi-Input: Now available for Profibus PA

FieldConnex Temperature Multi-Input Device (TM-I) facilitates the efficient integration of up to eight analog input signals in fieldbus communication. In addition to the proven connection to Foundation Fieldbus H1, the TM-I is now available for use with Profibus PA. Thermocouples or millivolt signals can be connected in the same way as resistance temperature sensors with two, three, or four wires. All inputs on the TM-I are intrinsically safe, even if the fieldbus connection itself is not. The inputs are quick and easy to configure, either together or individually. The process for configuring and integrating the control technology is extremely convenient as these tasks are carried out using General Station Descriptions and FDT/DTM.

Michael Brown Control Engineering Editor's Choice Fieldbus & Industrial Networking
The widely held belief in many plants that tuning will solve all base layer control problems is completely fallacious. Bad tuning is generally not the main reason for loops to perform badly. It is important when performing optimisation that all elements in a loop are considered, in addition to the control strategy, before even thinking of tuning.
