Environmentally friendly chillers from Julabo

January 2015 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Julabo’s FL range of recirculating chillers offers an environmentally friendly cooling system for routine cooling applications in laboratories and industry. To cool a standard rotary evaporator (1-3 litres) 200 days per year, about 250 000 litres of cooling water is needed. This is equal to the water consumption of a four person household. Using a Julabo FL recirculating Cooler, this is reduced to a mere 10 litres per year.

Not only does the FL series provide water savings, but condensation efficiency is doubled, which results in getting the job done in half the time. Another advantage is that up to 80% more solvent is recovered, which also reduces undesirable solvent vapours in the laboratory.

Over 20 models are available, spanning a temperature range from -20 to 40°C. Temperature stability of the PID control is 0,5°C.

The compact units of the FL models deliver up to 1,7 kW cooling capacity and can stand on or under lab tables. The more powerful models with up to 20 kW of cooling capacity are designed with small footprints. FL models are available with air or water cooling.

Powerful pumps in the devices deliver flow rates up to 60 l/min and pressure of 6 bar. All models from one bar have a pressure indicator and a pump pressure bypass for continuous adjustment of the pump pressure.

All units can easily be cleaned and are provided with a splash waterproof keypad with LED temperature indication. On the front of the units there is an RS-232 interface as well as an alarm shutdown.

At its peak in 1994, the energy generation capacity of the UK’s nuclear power stations was 12,7 GW across 16 plants. In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
