Modular switch with extensive routing functions

November 2014 IT in Manufacturing

Belden has extended its range of configurable modular industrial Ethernet switches in the Hirschmann MSP30 family. The new MSP30 Layer 3 switch offers extensive routing functions and enables communication between physically separated networks. This managed rail switch also supports a wide range of security functions and guarantees all-around protection for the network to ensure maximum productivity for connected systems and machines at all times.

According to product manager Vinod Rana, Layer 3 capability brings routing to the shop floor: “The new MSP30’s unique security functions set the standard for network availability, while its modular design allows for flexible and cost-effective solutions,” he says.

Boasting all the advantages of the MSP30 family, the switch’s combination of extensive routing and security functions makes it a powerful alternative for DIN rail industrial Ethernet systems. Thanks to Power over Ethernet Plus (POE+) support, terminal equipment can be powered cost-effectively straight from the data line, eliminating the need for additional power supply units or extra cables.

The MSP30 Layer 3 switch supports standard redundancy protocols, allowing users to segment networks into sub-rings, thereby enhancing its availability even further. Due to the device’s ruggedised design, it is suitable for use in harsh conditions near the shop floor where it facilitates direct routing to other production floors without the need for a backbone router.

The modular design of the switch provides users with flexibility for both current and future requirements without replacing the entire switch. Also, modules from other switches in the MSP30 family can also be used in the new routing variant.
