Vibration monitoring in highly explosive areas

June 2014 Maintenance, Test & Measurement, Calibration

The VSP acceleration sensor from ifm electronic is designed to detect measurement values in atmospheres with a highly explosive potential such as are found in the chemical, pharmaceutical, food and mining sectors. Due to unbalance or misalignment, machine vibration can quickly exceed a permissible level, resulting in a high risk potential. Together with the VSE100 diagnostic unit and the ZB0633 barrier, the ifm system can be implemented in zones where the highest risks arise.

The VSP measures vibration up to +80 g over a frequency range from 2 to 10 000 Hz and feeds the data back to the VSE. Using the VES003 software for parameter setting, the VSE monitors, analyses and records the values and events, providing multiple outputs for signalling events and trends. These outputs range from simple switched and analogue signals to full Ethernet TCP/IP. Even in the most potentially explosive atmospheres, the VSP/VSE combination can monitor the performance of bearings, motors, shafts and other moving components on a continuous basis, providing the plant operator with full information to make decisions from planned maintenance to a controlled shutdown.

ifm - South Africa Electrical Power & Protection
Despite growing digitalisation, there are still many situations where analogue measured values such as the level in a tank or the temperature of a climatised room must be directly readable in the control cabinet or at the control desk. The current loop display is designed for precisely this purpose.
